In 1997, a group of Hong Kong wine lovers, on a path to share their passion with same-minded people, decided to create their own wine merchant company, called Merit Wine Boutique (MWB). Over the last decade, MWB became of one of the leading wine companies in Hong Kong. Gathering an extensive wine selection of over 1000 bins, we serve major hotels & restaurants (The Peninsula, Intercontinental, Four Seasons, Hyatt amongst others), most exclusive private clubs (Hong Kong Jockey Club, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Hong Kong Country Club, The Repulse Bay), as well as high-end retailers (City Super, wine retail specialists, …) covering almost all segments requiring professional wine service.
Led by the same passion that initiated the company and comforted by the success of its business model, MWB started to develop its activities outside of Hong Kong. We started ventures in Asia and Europe, including China as a strategic market. In order to comply with the company’s international ambitions, MWB changed its name to Royal Oak Asia Holding Ltd. and established its China head-office in Shanghai in 2011.
In an effort to develop sales in Japan, Royal Oak joined forces with Tokuoka, one of Japan’s oldest wine importers, with 140 years of experience. It resulted in a wider and more global cooperation with several high-profile projects: Opening of a sourcing office in London, UK; establishment of a negociant house in France; purchasing of Weingut Josef Biffar, a historical winery in Germany; startup of a mineral water bottling center and a wine bottling plant in Japan; investment in local breweries in Belgium and Vietnam. Sourcing capabilities and product marketing development became a strong core competency of Royal Oak.
Royal Oak approach to Chinese market is resolutely orientated toward organic growth and assisting the market in its wine discovery. Adapting the operations and experience of Hong Kong to China specificities, Royal Oak is focusing on 4 major distribution channels: Hotels & restaurants in major cities, Distributors network on a national level, private brand development and Wine store franchising with strategic partners.
